A bizarre and brilliantly imaginative excursion into the Theatre of the Absurd, which brings humor and arresting theatricality to the author’s singular understanding of those who have been rejected and isolated by society.

The Gnädiges Fräulein, translated from German as “The Gracious Lady,” marked a startling departure in the work of Tennessee Williams. Surreal, with abstract characters and nonsense dialogue, its action is in the spirit of an animated cartoon. Williams himself called it a Slapstick Tragedy, “akin to vaudeville, burlesque, and slapstick, with a dash of pop art thrown in.
